Kathryn Tickell & The Darkening
Kathryn Tickell & The Darkening are as an inspired and incendiary band as the north-east English folk scene could produce, a visceral immersion in the music and mythology of the ancient kingdom of Northumbria, magnetically and skilfully transported into the 21st century.
The charismatic frontwoman - twice awarded BBC Radio's Folk Musician of the Year - and her band, whose name recalls the Northumbrian word for twilight, create magical, dynamic music called ‘Ancient Northumbrian Futurism’.
Their songs, inspired by the wildest and most weather-scarred countryside along Hadrian's Wall, explore the threads connecting sounds, landscapes and people over a period of almost 2,000 years, tackling diverse themes from freedom to nature to even the oldest and least known history.
Following the great success of ‘Hollowbone’, their 2019 debut album, in 2023 Kathryn Tickell & The Darkening present ‘Cloud Horizons’, an even more vital, energetic and inspiring project in which Northumbrian traditions meet global influences.
